Kim Trio

Helena Kay - tenor saxophone
Ferg Ireland - double bass
David Ingamells - drums

KIM Trio is led by tenor saxophonist Helena Kay (Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2015), and features Ferg Ireland (Kansas Smittys) on double bass and David Ingamells (Yamaha Jazz Scholarship 2013) on drums. The trio have performed at the London Jazz Festival, Glasgow Jazz Festival, played live on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Now, as well as various other gigs in London and the UK. Inspired by greats such as Sonny Rollins and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and by contemporary names like Melissa Aldana and Larry Goldings, the trio enjoy playing a varied mixture of Helena’s originals and tunes from the jazz canon. They will be releasing their debut album Moon Palace on Ubuntu Music in December 2018.

‘Bobby Wellins would have heard a kindred spirit in the unhurried gracefulness of Kay’s improvising… the marvellously self-possessed Kay’s sheer musicality, sure tone and beautifully expressed flow of ideas that stood out above all in a literally winning performance.‘ Rob Adams

‘[S]ublime music that stirs the senses and emotions‘ Glasgow Herald

‘One to watch‘ Jazzwise

‘Kay produces a beautiful tone on tenor… Her improvisations are superbly well constructed, always keeping the original theme within touching distance, and her use of pauses and space adds both to the overall beguiling effect and the sense of genuine instant composition’ Rob Adams

‘This was indeed a vituoso venture for Helena… Her mellow sound was appealing, too’ John Watson, London Jazz News

‘What shone out so well, alongside Kay’s obvious improvisational prowess and balmy tone/vibrato, was the strength of her compositions. With Charlie Parker named as her hero, and a clear leaning towards Sonny Rollins, there was a restrained feel-good about these performances – yet the picturesque writing held the attention, its richness and interest never waning.’ Adrian Pallant, London Jazz News
